The Ready, Set, Teach program has officially begun, giving students a unique opportunity to explore careers in education while developing skills that will serve them long after graduation.
Ready, Set, Teach is a two-credit, internship-based class where students are paired up with experienced Comal ISD mentor teachers, allowing them to gain hands-on classroom experience and truly “try on the hat” of a teacher.
For many students involved, the program is more than just a class; it is a formative life experience.
“Ready, Set, Teach has taught me more than just how to be an educator,” senior Kaida Braswell said. “I’ve learned the importance of relationships, respect, and passion for what you do. I’ve gained experience I can take with me into every aspect of adulthood.”
Braswell plans to work part-time in an early childcare center while earning her Bachelor’s degree in Education online, with the goal of returning to Comal ISD to teach at the elementary level.
She credits the program for providing the knowledge, connections, and confidence to pursue her career path.
According to Mrs. Carpenter, the program’s teacher, the program aims to give students real-world insight into the teaching profession while also fostering transferable skills such as initiative and professionalism.
“We spend time talking about what taking initiative looks like as a student-teacher and as a professional,” she explained. “Students learn how to manage a classroom, handle challenges, and lead lessons. By the end of the program, they walk away with skills they can apply to any career.”
Some of the most memorable moments in Ready, Set, Teach occur when students step fully into the teacher role. Mrs. Carpenter recalls the pride she feels watching students teach their first full lesson.
“It’s a full-circle moment,” she said. “They gain confidence, experience the rewards of teaching, and form meaningful connections with both their students and the community.”
Events like the fall festival, where interns interact with students and families outside the classroom, further strengthen these bonds.
Ready, Set, Teach is more than a stepping stone to a career- it’s an extensive program that fosters growth, professionalism, and confidence, equipping students to succeed both in the classroom and in life.
“Watching that transformation- from nervous, wide-eyed students to confident, capable intern teachers- is my favorite part of the job. It’s just beautiful to see how much they grow.”
